Your business has a body. Look after it.

You don't need a medical degree to stay healthy. You wash your hands, you look both ways before crossing, and when something doesn't feel right you get it checked. Cybersecurity is that same instinct, pointed at your business. And the biggest mistake is the same one, too: assuming that because you feel fine, you are fine.

According to the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, more than eight in ten organisations here were hit by a cyber incident in a single year, and around half were hit several times. Yet when businesses were asked why they hadn't bothered with protection, one of the most common answers was that they assumed they'd never be a target. Feeling fine isn't the same as being healthy. Attackers can sit inside a network for months, quietly, while everything looks perfectly normal from the outside.

The good news is that staying healthy was never about one miracle cure. Your body doesn't rely on a single defence, and neither should your business. Three things do most of the work.

The mouth. Most infections get in through what you swallow. For a business, that's email. It's where the overwhelming majority of attacks arrive, dressed up as something completely ordinary: an invoice, a delivery notice, a message from your boss. Reported phishing cases in Singapore jumped by roughly half in a single year. Good email protection is the thing that catches the contaminated meal before anyone takes a bite, and it matters more than anything else you'll do, because it guards the door most trouble walks through.

The skin. Your skin is a barrier that lets the good in, keeps the bad out, and stops what's precious from leaking away. Your business needs the same around everything your people touch online: filtering the dangerous websites and downloads before anyone clicks, and stopping your customer records and financials from quietly draining out. Crucially, your immune system doesn't hand out free passes just because something's already inside you. It keeps checking. That's how access to your systems should work too. And like your skin, this protection has to travel with you. Your staff work from home, from cafés, from the road, and their defences need to go where they go. Locking the office door stopped being enough the moment the office stopped being the only place work happens.

The nervous system. Here's the part most businesses miss. A headache on its own means nothing. A headache, plus a temperature, plus a cough, all at once, is a diagnosis. Your systems throw off small signals constantly, and individually they're meaningless. It takes something watching around the clock to join them up, and someone who can act the moment they add up to something. Detection without response is a smoke alarm with no fire brigade.

None of this is a silver bullet, and anyone selling you one is selling snake oil. You can eat well, exercise, and still catch a cold. The point isn't a perfect defence, it's better odds, early detection, and a fast recovery when something does slip through.

It also has to fit you. You don't pack swimwear to go skiing, and the umbrella that survives a Singapore downpour isn't the one you'd bother with in a light drizzle. A law firm, a workshop and a dental practice face different risks and need different cover.

So: is it worth it? Think about it the way you'd think about your own health. Prevention costs a fraction of treatment. A single social-engineering attack costs a Singapore business around S$116,000 on average. A serious ransomware attack runs closer to S$1.5 million. Getting a small business to a solid baseline costs a fraction of this, essentially the difference between a check-up and an ambulance.

You wouldn't perform your own surgery. Most small businesses don't have a medical team in-house, and the good news is they don't need one.
